Love Trumps Hate: Unity Demonstration

November 17, 2016, 5:00pm - November 17, 2016, 7:00pm

Mlk Commons

For many, the outcome of the 2016 election has brought out anger, anxiety, and fear. Join various NIU cultural and student organizations as we hold a unity demonstration to celebrate our differences to show that we will not give into fear or hate that has dominated the 2016 election due to Trump’s platform. We will come together as a university and a community to provide support to one another and to make a stand against hate! This event is an opportunity to unify those that are affected negatively by Trump’s election and to stand together in solidarity and to empower each other in a safe and peaceful space. At this event, we will have a table with resources to write letters to Trump, state representatives, and senators in order to positively and peacefully respond to the concern that we have about this election. There will be speakers promoting solidarity, offering resources, and providing direction for how to respond positively to the negative post election-environment. In addition to having all these fantastic resources, we will also be having an open mic portion that will allow individuals to speak. We ask that individuals expess the unity and love that this event stands for. There will be a time limit of 3 minutes or the duration of a song, spoken word, poem, ect. This is not meant to censor people but to ensure that all voices are heard. Speakers: Gabe Sonntag from United By Diversity Lynnea Laskowski from Safe Passage Traci Jennings from Black Student Union Rodolfo Rosiles from Supporting Opportunities for Latinos Ellie Evins from the Women's Rights Alliance Melissa Czechowski from the Women's Rights Alliance Alex Forgue from PRISM Caprisha Williams from Illinois Imagines Karli Johnson from Karli Educates Organizations: #LOVETRUMPSHATE NIU Student Committee Women's Rights Alliance Prism Black Student Union United By Diversity

Another event that the MSA will be participating in is happening TONIGHT at 7PM! Hosted by the African Student Association!

Americans between the ages of 18-25 will be most affected by this upcoming election, yet the voice of this age bracket is the weakest. The purpose of this event is not to sway anyone’s votes, but rather to learn from each other and possibly gain from the experience.

Come join the discussion tonight at 7PM!
